“Frank Sinatra Has A Cold” is getting old

“Frank Sinatra Has A Cold” is one of the first things my journalistic essay students read each semester. It is considered by many to be the best magazine profile ever written.

And while many of my students appreciate the writing and level of detailed reporting, many of them also find it dated and irrelevant.

So I was pleased to see Esquire is marking its 75th anniversary by naming the seven best stories it has ever published. There are some more recent options for me to teach next year, and some good winter break reading in the mean time.

  1. I’d heard of that article before but, since I didn’t study journalism and am in fact a miserable journalist, I’d never searched it out. It was wonderful to read. Vibrant and it attacks an icon from another angle.
